Before you cancel Microsoft 365.

Most Microsoft 365 business subscriptions stay Expired for 30 days and Disabled for 90 after they end, and then the data is gone. Who can run an eDiscovery export, the 14-day download window, and what is deleted when a user loses a license.

Every claim below restates Microsoft’s own documentation (12 pages), with the passage it rests on. Re-checked against the live pages on October 29, 2026.

What happens to the data when you cancel Microsoft 365

  1. For most offers in most countries and regions, a subscription enters the Expired status as soon as it reaches its end date (whether its term ran out, you turned off recurring billing or you upgraded it), stays Expired for 30 days, then Disabled for 90 days, and is then Deleted.

Plans: Microsoft 365 for business subscriptions, most offers in most countries, except license-based subscriptions bought directly through a Microsoft Customer Agreement (no Expired stage since February 9, 2026); Enterprise Agreement, Volume Licensing, Open Value and CSP purchases follow their own tables

Plans: most offers, in most countries/regions

    Microsoft’s words
    | Active | Expired* | Disabled* | Deleted Customer data | Data is accessible to all | Data is accessible to all | Data is accessible to admins only | Data is deleted and Microsoft Entra ID is removed, if not in use by other services ...
